Miami Schmatta Documentary Screening and Q&A With Clare Vickery

Set against Miami's vibrant backdrop, Miami Schmatta is a touching, illuminating documentary that explores the remarkable legacy of immigrants who transformed their lives through the American garment industry. Featuring heartfelt interviews with Miami-based business owners, tailors, fashion designers, factory workers, and professors, the film chronicles the rise of a flourishing post-World War II industry and its expansion through the 1980s. As shifting trade agreements in the 1990s led to a decline in US-based manufacturing, Miami's industry faced upheaval, moving production to Central and South America and Asia. Despite challenges and labor shortages, a scaled-down garment industry endures in Miami. As the older generation retires, the film poignantly questions whether the next generation can uphold this cherished and intricate trade. This special event will include the attendance of director Clare Vickery, who will introduce the film and participate in a Q&A after the screening, moderated by Avi Hoffman.
